Design of the study. Brain sections of male and female rats killed at post-natal week 10 were analyzed by using gene-specific probes and performing fluorescent in situ hybridization. The slides were scanned with a digital full slide scanner at 20 × mean magnification. Quantification of Cyp19a1+ as well as cell marker+ cells was performed using CellProfiler. The right panel shows Cyp19a1 (red) predominantly surrounding the DAPI-stained nucleus (blue) of the expressing cells. Some Cyp19a1+ nuclei are indicated with a white arrow.
