CVB3 replicates at the same level in males and females during the innate immune response. Male and female BALB/c mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with 103 plaque forming units (PFU) of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3)or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) on day 0 and the level of viral replication in the spleen (A) and pancreas (B) examined at 12 h and 48 h post infection. No viral replication was detected in uninfected PBS controls. No significant differences in viral replication were observed in CVB3 infected males compared to infected females. Data show the mean ± standard error of the mean of 5 - 7 mice pergroup.
